Message | What burden on our economy is the current student loan system having? The answer is, none. Fully subsidising the cost of tuition is not only expensive, it will have an adverse effect on our economy as money that would otherwise be used in other sectors of the economy, or even other areas of eductaion, would have to be pumped into providing the massive cost of tutoring students. The idea that recent graduates have problems purchasing new homes or staring their own business due to the loan system is completely unsubstantiated, not least because said loan does not require immediate payback nor are the repayments set at such a level as to adversely effect those students with the income to afford to repay their loans. Students from low income families would not be badly effected by the current system as they would receive the maximum permissable thusly allowing them to easily afford the cost of tuition. Those students from higher income families would receive less depending upon their ability to afford tuition, again this is fair as they can afford the costs involved. This bill would do the complete opposite of what it pertains to do, and though we admire the HB for their ideals, we cannot support this as the costs to both the taxpayer and the economy would be astronomically high for comparatively little gain. |
