Bill: Religious Identity Bill of 2732

Details

Submitted by[?]: League of St. Gabriel

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2733

Description[?]:

With regards to Article 1, we feel that both legislations have roughly the same effect. In practice, screening individuals always involves a look at the religion in a practical sense. With regards to article 2, we feel that religions should be allowed to have a non-profit status, and thus should not be taxed so long as they maintain this status. We only put the restriction of a "recognized" religion in order to avoid unscrupulous groups or individuals trying to gain false exemptions.

We at the League of St. Gabriel believe in forging a cohesive religious identity throughout the nation based on a common religion. While the religion of the majority of the people shall be considered the "national" religion, there shall be no obligation to join nor practice it.

MessageThe Liberal Party holds as one of its core principles the clear division between State and Church.

We feel Article 1 is discriminatory no matter whether it is done to religions, people of a certain race or culture, or organizations.

We many consider Article 2 in the future but we want to make sure that religious institutions truly keep their word and act in a non-profit basis.

Article 3 is against our principle of State and Church. Since public schools are funded by the government and we do not have a national recognized religion, it is inappropriate and unnecessary to impose "prayer" upon those who do not wish to do so. Religious schools are private entities and those enrolled know the clear purpose (charter) of the school.

Article 4 is definitely against our ideal and we must add that having a recognized state religion is simple discriminating against those of other religions and non-believers.

Therefore, we oppose this bill as it stands.

MessageOn Article 3: We wish to devolve the rights of regulating prayer to a local level. There are districts which will be more religious than one another.

A state religion need not be recognized or discriminating. The Anglican Church is the official church of England, but other faiths are permitted to co-exist among English citizens, and discrimination is illegal. The Church of Sweden is the official, symbolic religion of Sweden, but the Swedes are known to be progressive and openminded. The reason why membership is voluntary is that nobody is required to join to recieve rights as citizens, and people who do not join will not be discriminated against.
