Bill: Subsidized Media Bill
Details
Submitted by[?]: Popular Socialist Liberation Movement
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 2741
Description[?]:
TV and radio broadcasting is an expensive and not always cost-effective business. PSLM fears that Rutanian media can be controlled by large corporations which can restrict freedom of speech in their own interests. We think that government should subsidize some radio and TV stations which will be fully independent both from state and from big business. Of course private media should be also allowed. |

Message | The PSLM stated that the media financed by large corporations can intervene in the activity of those media organs and restrict the freedom of speech in their own interest. A state-financed media institution would not be free because it is financed by the state, therefore is influenced by the state. The REP does not see the neccessity of this measure. Besides this, the different media trusts are competing so they are providing accurate information. If one institution restricts an opinion the other will display is. This is the wonderful thing in competition and inequality. Victoria von Bruckenthal Vice-Chairman, REP |

Message | Government involvement in the media is troublesome - inevitably, any government funded or managed media program or publication will reflect the biases of the government of its time. The free media is an invaluable check on the government, ensuring that it is held accountable, as the media is highly influential, but seperate from government, and, therefore, able to freely criticize it. Government involvement in the media would eliminate this. |

Message | Yes, competition is a good thing, but competition can become unfair. Government must guarantee that even in case of media conspiracy Rutanian citizens can access to fair, unbiased sources of information. Private media companies interested only in profit-making, but not in providing reliable information. Without non-profit making media people can't verify the truth or not tells the private media. Government-subsidized media will de depend from state only financially. State won't regulate its content. |
