Message | Once again, the environment is used as a pretext for strengthening and centralizing federal government power. Local governments are not somehow less capable of managing public transport on behalf of the local families and communities they represent, as the HA seem to be suggesting - such an idea is fallacious. The vast majority of public transport is of a local nature, and is, therefore, not logically a matter for the federal government. We get the distinct impression that this legislation was not proposed out of a concern for the efficiency of the various public transport systems, but for purely political and ideological reasons - i.e., the HA's preference for strong, central government control over decentralization. Having public transport managed by local governments at a level closer to the people will make the services more accountable and responsive to the needs of those who use them. We strongly oppose this legislation. |

Message | What about intercity or even interregional travel? An integrated public transit system can only happen with the support of the Commonwealth. |

Message | Inter-city or inter-state transport doesn't necessarily demand Commonwealth funding and management. If it's in the itnerest of both states involved, they would likely be more than willing to co-operate with each other on a joint initiative. In any case, inter-city and inter-state public transport is a relatively minor issue compared to public transport networks within each region - the vast majority of travellers going to another city or state will fly due to cheaper cost and faster travel time. |
