Old value:: There shall be a minimum wage at a level that a full time worker on it can support a family of four without falling under the poverty line.
Current: There shall be a minimum wage at a level considered a "living wage," well above the poverty line for a full time worker.
Proposed: There is no provision for a minimum wage.

| Message | Minimum wages, especially in such an elevated level, harms especially the poorest among the poor: the handicapped, young workers and unskilled labourers. Those whose productivity is below the level of the minimum wage (supporting a family of 4!) will no doubt be unemployed or dependent on government handouts. Let us repeal this terrible piece of legislation and boost employment opportunities for poor Alorians. I refer you to economist Deepak Lal's book "The minimum wage: no way to help the poor" for reference on this issue. |
