Old value:: The nation imposes reciprocal tariffs on imports, with no tariffs imposed on states which impose no tariffs on our exports.
Current: The nation allows for imports, but imposes "ethical" tariffs on nations with lower environmental and labour rights standards.

Message | This would also have the effect of encourage companies and factories to move overseas, where their costs could be reduced. This would further increase unemployment, which as the Classical Liberals have pointed out is a rather serious issue that must be addressed. |

Message | Import tax is a cost for business, if we eliminate it their costs will be reduced. The only reason why companies would move overseas is if the tax was increased. |

Message | Indeed, it is a tax, but only for companies that operate overseas and do not give jobs to our workers. It is designed to reward companies that award jobs to Badarans. |

Message | You are thinking of export not import. None of what you say is true. IMPORT Company A in Badara employs 10 Badarans. It manufactures cars but buys some components from another nation. With an import tax, the government increases the price of these components it has to buy which means Company A produces less, makes less money, have to reduce costs which can include getting rid of employees. EXPORT Company A in Badara employs 10 Badarans. It manufactures cars and sells a certain % abroad. A foreign government increases the price of these cars with its import tax, reducing the sales of Company A, they produce less, make less money, have to reduce costs which can include getting rid of employees. You may say that an import tax is beneficial because it forces companies to not buy goods from abroad, but instead buy goods from Badara. But these local goods may be of inferior quality or may not even be produced in Badara, so Company A has no alternative but to buy abroad. Whatever the case may be, you can see how protectionism damages every business. |

Message | What we have argued applies specifically for imports. In your first provided example, Company A can easily reduce its cost by buying components from Badaran companies. In fact, when Company A selects to import the components it needs, other Badaran companies that also make those same components lose profit, and have to reduce costs by means such as firing employees. In regards to your second example, the responsibility lies solely with foreign governments; just because we completely eliminate tariffs does not mean other countries will do the same. This government has always supported free trade when possible. In fact, it is this government that authored the Majatran Free Trade Agreement and secured free trade with five other nations on the continent of Majatra. It is also this government's policy to not impose tariffs unless it is necessary to protect jobs in our country. However, tariffs is sometimes the only way to prevent Badara from losing jobs, and it would be irresponsible of us to not implement taxes on imports when jobs are at risk. |
