Message | The JLSP believes the keyword in this bill is 'vital'. The JLSP would rather we have an inefficient vital industry than have us stuck without it. If our power industry were to go under, shall we live in the dark for a couple of months or years, just so we can say we were hard core free marketeers? It's hardly a good idea, which is why the law in its current form is an excellent safety net, even if just a temporary one. |

Message | OOC: Because this is a real life reference, I have to say this out-of-character. When have we ever had an entire industry "go under"? If a company or the whole industry "fails," it's usually as a result of one of two things: an unexpected disaster (like say a hurricane) or competition from abroad. I'll make allowances for relief funding that would go towards companies recovering from a natural disaster, but that seems a distinctly separate issue from this proposal. The only other possible scenario is failure as a result of foreign competition. We've seen this time and time again, with steel mills, textiles, manufacturing. However, just because the domestic industry failed does not mean that goods were no longer provided in these cases -- they were simply provided by foreign firms. If you can think of an actual scenario outside of those two, please share your thoughts, JLS. |
