Bill: Education before Indoctrination Bill, 2132

Details

Submitted by[?]: Social Dynamist Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2135

Description[?]:

This bill would require schools to prioritise education before anything else.
Teachers will, of course, be permitted to lead pupils in prayer, but this is to take place as an out-of-school activity for which teachers are not be paid.
Schools may, from their own budget, fund introductory sessions to each of the most represented faiths (up to once a year per faith), as 'field trips' for Religious Education, such as visits to temples, and observance of or participation in rithuals therein. However, no child will be compelled to practise a religion different to their own.

This bill will not affect prayer in schools set up on a religious basis.

MessageWe support this. Education is about preparing the childrens' minds to think for themselves and make decisions in the real world. If students are taught that they must believe one certain thing that has no evidence supporting it, only faith, then they cannot learn to form their own opinions. When substantial evidence about the subject is required, students learn the need for a factual basis. How would it work, suppose, in a debate if instead of factual information, the two sides used their own belief system? It would not work. Debates need to be based on real facts which can be proven and disproven, not on an abstract idea for which there is no "reality."

Message"Education is as much about character building as it is about knowledge."
By all means, but we believe that the way to do this is through encouraging them to think about their values, and by persuasion - not ritual.
At the moment, we desensitise our children by requiring them to sing the national anthem, and, in cases, pray. The meaning is lost because we make these activities chores, and neither understanding nor belief follows. If our children spend 25 minutes a week listening to a lecture on faith or debating important religious questions, will they be better off than if they spend five minutes a day repeating what their teacher tells them? Will we encourage our children to embrace our nation and tribes by forcing to sing a song every morning or by learning about our history and culture?

MessageWe are prepared to compromise on prayer, and agree to leaving the decision to the schools.

However, we are quite firm in our insistence that our national anthem be given the respect it is due and that it be sung every day in schools.
