Message | The Prime Minister: Mr Speaker, rather than make my own introduction to this bill, I would like to quote my late friend and colleague, Marquess Percival, who, in way of introduction to his own "Polygamous Lifestyle Act", said: "Mr Speaker, as the law currently stands, individuals can be prosecuted simply for pursuing a polygamous lifestyle, that is, for example, a man living with two females and having intercourse and a relationship with those females. Of course, this may occur vice versa. And whilst I understand that we may be uncomfortable in formally allowing an individual to marry more than one person, simply pursuing such a lifestyle, with marriage removed, should not be a crime, or a matter for prosecution. Mr Speaker, I would therefore like to propose that the government removes itself completely from issues relating to polygamy. It is not up to the state to dictate an individual's sexual activities. Should an individual choose to pursue a relationship with more than one person, and should those other persons be of the correct age, and of fit mental state, and enter into such a relationship willingly, then we should have no role in preventing that." Mr Speaker, the position of the CLP has not changed on this, and I urge swift passage to the House. |
