Message | Rt Hon David Craddock MP, Trade and Industry Secretary: Mr Speaker, I welcomed very much the URR's decision to support strike democracy once again. It was very much a step in the right direction. However, what we are currently seeing in some areas, are strike ballots being conducted at the last moment, meaning that many moderate members are not receiving an opportunity to have their say on the issue of strikes. That means, Mr Speaker, they are being pretty much forced out on strike against their will. We must stop such underhand and undemocratic techniques of holding strikes, and ensuring that there is proper democracy. The parties opposite would be the first to complain if the government held an election at the very last minute with only their own party supporters being aware that an election was being held. They would be the first to complain Mr Speaker. Why do they treat the issue of democracy differently when it concerns the trade unions? |
