MessageMr Speaker, the city was named after not just a CLP leader, but a Prime Minister. The NSP are attempting to politicise this issue. It must be a reminder that more than one party supported the renaming of the city. A vast majority of people saw Duchess Wright as the person that led them out of the dark days of Lusk autocracy. Even when they disagreed with her policies, they respected her as a leader who spred freedom and democracy throughout the land after years and years of authoritarianism. The city name has been in use for years and the vast majority of people in Wrightstown favour this name, and support this name given their deep devotion to the principles of Duchess Wright, and the respect for her leadership. These people would oppose this renaming.

MessageMr Speaker, the CLP is exaggerating the issue. Firstly, this proposal does not abolish the name "Wrightstown," it merely amends it with the historical name as an appendage. It gives equal official weight to both names and permits the use of both according to the personal decision of the person in question.

Secondly, the name is already politicised. For us in the NSP, the "dark days of the Lusk autocracy" as the gentleman so charmingly put it was a time of unparalleled artistic and cultural achievement, and a model for future ages. Those parties which follow a Luskite ideology— beyond just the NSP, Mr Speaker— would surely agree at least in principle with the idea that the Lusk era was no "dark days." To us, the Duchess was not a hero but villain.

It's true that Linda is a longtime CLP stronghold, but that is no justification. Can you imagine, Mr Speaker, what this land would be like if we renamed cities based on the political fashion of the moment?

Finally, Mr Speaker, for those us with a grounding in Hutori history, this smacks too strongly of the methods used the PRCP to alter the history of the country. Bekenial, our capitol, was renamed Adrianopolis after the PRCP leader, Woodhurst was known as Matissah after another hero of the age, et cetera. Even the Saiserists established Saiserstadt and Konstantinople.

MessageMr Speaker, several times, the Lusk family imposed a one-party state upon this country, the final one lasting over 20 years. Democracy was dead and liberty strangled. The NSP's distaste for democracy only shows that they wish a return to such an era. Only landowners could vote, immigrants were denied rights, and voting was sporadic. Mr Speaker, Duchess Wright ended this, taking great personal risk in forming a political party and opposing the Lusk state. The people embraced her as she led the party out of darkness and into light. Whatever you may think of her economic reforms, she ensured that all people had rights, all could vote, and all could develop in life. A far cry, Mr Speaker, from the Lusk days. We recognise her divisiveness, but the people of this great and noble city entirely supported the renaming.

Mr Speaker, the NSP should not be so quick to accuse others of a lack of grounding in Hutorian history. Did the Lusks return the rightful name of Hutori? Did the Lusks put the rightful monarch back on His throne? Indeed, most of these city names, especially "Linda", , were creations of the Lusks themselves. No wonder they opposed this change! "Linda" is hardly a "historical name" - it's a Lusk invention. Mr Speaker, when we proposed renaming this city Wrightstown, we made a guarantee that we would never propose such a renaming again. However, popular support in that city, and the overwhelming benefits that the Duchess gave to the country, made this renaming a unique exception.

Mr Speaker, given the fact that the Lusks completely restructured the state and the country in their own image, their claims strike us as somewhat laughable.

MessageMr Speaker, this bill should not be construed as a referendum on Lusk policy or the Lusk era. This is simply a matter of naming the tenth-largest city in Hutori either only after a politician in living memory, or after that politician, plus recognizing a common alternative name for it. From the way parties have voted, however, we can clearly see that parties with a Lusk-aligned ideology have voted for it, and those opposed to our ideology have voted against it, with those neutral abstaining. We are sorry we allowed the debate to be derailed in this way.
