MessageRt Hon Duchess Thompson MP:

Mr Speaker, the House will acknowledge that the CLP has compromised on this issue. It is important that some change is made to the status quo to ensure that business can operate with some certainty. Mr Speaker, we accept, more than other parties would have the people believe, that workers have the right to strike. Indeed, we regard it as a basic civil liberty. However, there must be some control on this Mr Speaker, to ensure that the rights of workers are balanced with the rights of the population at large to receive goods and services. Mr Speaker, the current situation spreads uncertainty across the land, and some unions seem to be suggesting strikes almost continuously! We believe that this would be a step in the right direction, ensuring that strike action is taken only when it has something to do with their own work. Mr Speaker, it would also allow the employer to have some autonomy back, being able to make decisions. This Act will also enshrine in law the right of an employee to seek compensation for unlawful dismissal. That is a first, Mr Speaker, and something we are sure that the other parties will be keen to support.

Random fact: Party candidates for head of state elections are not visible to the public. This means that you cannot see who will run and who will not, which adds another strategic element to the elections.

Random quote: "It is necessary for him who lays out a state and arranges laws for it to presuppose that all men are evil and that they are always going to act according to the wickedness of their spirits whenever they have free scope." - Niccolo Machiavelli
