Message | Rt Hon David Craddock MP, Prime Minister: Madam Speaker, we live in a country today where many of the political parties seek to wrap the people in cotton wool, regulate everything in sight and make the difficult decisions for them. Madam Speaker, this sounds excellent were we living in an ideal world. However, a consequence of this sort of politics is that we now live in a country where people do not have to take any personal responsibility. If difficult decisions are taken away from the people, Madam Speaker, people do not have to consider their options and then hold themselves accountable for those decisions made. Madam Speaker, a strong nation is built on personal and social responsibility, with the government taking a step back, and this is what this bill will achieve. |

Message | Madame Speaker, while we appreciate the CLP's stance on this, we feel that allowing the councils to make their own decisions on how they would best like to go – through referendum and direct election by each's subjects – is the best way to support independent personal and social responsibility in all our private and public lives. |
