Message | Madam Speaker, public assembly is an ineffectual and potentially dangerous method of political speech. We suggest that groups wishing to effect change in the House be content with lobbying, petitioning, and of course voting. |

Message | Madam Speaker, freedom of assembly is a basic right. The current law would potentially allow a 'club' or 'society' to be disbanded on grounds of public safety. It would enable the authorities to disperse a group of people in a public park gathered together to demonstrate against something. Madam Speaker, occasionally, a march or public protest is the best and most efficient way of demonstrating opposition. Of course, lobbying, petitioning and the like are important, but sometimes more than that is necessary. Madam Speaker, what about the picket line that the NLP love so much? The potential for that to be outlawed are real. Madam Speaker, public assembly is a basic right and should not be limited. The police should only intervene when violence sets in. |
