MessageRt Hon Eric Appleby MP, Trade and Industry Secretary:

Madam Speaker, I am never now surprised by what the members opposite choose to introduce to this chamber. But, Madam Speaker, I am finding it increasingly difficult to understand just how some of their policies match with their rhetoric. The NSC claims to have the interests of working people at heart. In debates on free trade, they claimed that we should impose tariffs and quotas because it would benefit Hutorian farmers. Madam Speaker, if the NSC really cared about the farmers of Hutori, would they propose to put them all out of jobs? Would they propose to seize all of their land, machinery, equipment and livestock, and put it into state ownership? Madam Speaker, many of Hutori's farmers go back generations and, in some cases, have worked the same plots of land for centuries. They have already broken up some of these farms but cannot stop there; they wish to seize them entirely. Madam Speaker, I just cannot understand how on the one hand the NSC claim to be looking out for the farmers and on the other they desire to take everything away. Perhaps their Agriculture spokesman or their Industry spokesman could shed light on the issue?

MessageRt Hon Baron Mancini MP, NSC Frontbencher,

Madam Speaker, perhaps i can answer the gentleman. The state will own the operation, but these farmers will be employed by the state to work on these operations. Fairly obvious really. The State is not going to put all farmers out of a job - can i ask the CLP member to stop scaring the people of Hutori. The State will simply take profits, not peoples income.

MessageMadam Speaker, the majority of farmers enjoy being self-employed. The incentive for them is that they are working their own land, working for themselves and working for profit. Madam Speaker, farming is extremely labour intensive and some farmers often work 24 hours a day at key times of the year, whether that be harvest, lambing season or whatever. Madam Speaker, farmers will only do that if they are working for themselves, if they are running their own business. They will not do it if they are working for the state. Madam Speaker, I fear that this bill will not lead to the profitability that the gentleman expects, nor will it lead to the harmonious transition anticipated by the NSC.
