MessageRt Hon Marchioness Chukulate MP, Justice Secretary:

Madam Speaker, I vehemently oppose this bill on basic civil liberty laws, which I thought the party opposite was now committed to. Madam Speaker, this party believes that the individual is sovereign, that he should be able to do whatsoever he likes so long as he does not harm anybody else. Madam Speaker, the taking of drugs itself does not harm others. The consequences may, but that is a different issue altogether. If the taking of drugs leads an individual to violence, it is the violence that should be punished, not the drug-taking itself, for that is a decision that concerns the individual alone.

Madam Speaker, we appreciate the reasoning behind the NSC's proposal. They believe that they are helping the people live better lives. Madam Speaker, we do not believe that this will happen. Since decriminalising drugs, drug-related crime has decreased, as individuals do not have to break the law to get a hold of these substances. There has been a slight decrease in prostitution, as women do not need to sell their bodies to get these drugs. Most importantly, Madam Speaker, we have seen Drug Refuge Centres set up all over Hutori at no cost to the state. Drug addicts are able to properly approach these charities that help them recover from their addictions; prior to legalisation there was no such option for the problems stayed hidden due to their being criminal.

Madam Speaker, criminalising drugs will not solve the problem. Like prostitution, it will always be there. It will just be in the back streets, crime ridden and dangerous, unlike the situation now where it can be properly policed and in the light. This bill would be a backward step.
