Bill: Library Equality Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Revolutionary Socialist Alliance
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 2138
Description[?]:
This Bill aims to solve the difficulties of leaving the subject of libraries up to the local government. We all know that reading is essential, both for education and expanding knowledge, but also for enjoyment and recreation. By allowing this to be left up to local governments in regards to funding, this means that certain inequalities may crop up. We believe that by government allowing for a vast and comprehensive library system for all of Baltusia, we leave no one behind - we ensure quality, sensible funding, and not allow for a 'postcode lottery' on reading and broadening knowledge. I hope others will agree. |

Message | By leaving this in control of national government, there is always the risk that the contents of the libraries can be subject to political pressures, changing with new, radical administrations who wish to stamp their version of "truth" on matters. The current situation, where national government funds, but local government operates ensures that the contents are not subject to these dangerous political pressures. Should any particular region succomb, it is unlikely that all five would. This devolution provides a security of knowledge, and we condemn any effort to remove that. |

Message | This seems to bring the ISP a little too close to the values of a certain...Entente. We shall convene and decide once other parties have put forward their views. |

Random fact: Any RP law granting extraordinary "emergency powers" or dictator-like powers to a government must be passed by at least a 2/3rds majority, but (like all RP laws) may always be overturned by a simple majority vote of the legislature. |
