Message | After discussing with the police, prison warders and the general public, we have come to the firm conclusion that people were sick with the laid back attitude of the previous government and wish us to take tough and firm action on criminals instead of giving them an easy ride. Many opinion polls have been taken, and they have all come back with the view that people wish to see pragmatic change in the prison system and wish to see prisoner education abolished. The newspaper has an opinion poll in it furthermore. We have brought this to the attention of the senate, and we believe that this is something which needs voting through. We cannot waste taxpayers money to educate prisoners and help them gain qualifications during prison. If they wish to get educated, they can do so with their own money outside of prison like everyone else. Instead because of the last government, we just let them do what they want, educate them, we will pay for it, wait on them instead of forcing them to work and we pay for that. Ridiculous. This area needs urgent and pragmatic reform and we will no longer pay for the education of prisoners. Most people are behind this 100%. People are sick of the culture created by the CUP, tough on victims and soft on criminals. It needs reversing and this legislation is key to doing just that. Message | The SDA and any other sensibly minded party would see that an education for prisoners will provide them with skills that they can use in outside employment that may allow them to hold on to a job and thus be less inclined to commit crime in the future. It is for this reason that the SDA will be strongly voting against this proposal. Antoinette Chow Justice Secretary |
