Bill: Actively Seeking Information

Details

Submitted by[?]: Sue's Corner

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: March 2983

Description[?]:

We prefer not to call this torture as such, more tough on crime, tough on the criminals. As Acting Home Secretary, it is my pleasure to present some fantastic legislation to the senate. We must move forward and ensure our police are given every bit of information when they need it most, to detain criminals and help victims. It could be the difference between life and death.

Presented by Acting Home Secretary Joy Beckett.

MessageDon't get me wrong, I love civil liberties as much as the next liberal. But when information is needed, we have to be able to get to the bottom of crimes, detain criminals and help the victim. We cannot continue this unionist approach on crime. Soft on criminals and tough on victims. If there is a grave emergency, powers need to be given to those in power, to use whatever means possible to get information. It will apply only in circumstances where the situation is deeply dangerous and could result in loss of life, should information not be given. This boils down to who do you support- the victim or the criminal?

MessageThe SDLP accepts the Conservative Party's cogent argument in what is a very difficult area of legislation. However after considerable deliberation we cannot accept torture as a valid means of obtaining information. This is not about supporting criminals, rather we feel that were such legislation passed it would be the government committing criminal acts to garner information on criminals. We concede that without such legislation it may be tougher to find information that will help victims, but it cannot be guaranteed that information collected under such means would be accurate, and even if it were the measures taken to collect it are simply too harsh and liable to be misenforced.

Random quote: "The European Union and environmental advocacy groups use global warming hysteria to advance their own special agendas. The European Union recognizes any significant reduction in CO2 emissions by the United States will significantly reduce its economic output, thereby bringing it closer to the inferior output of European nations. Environmental advocacy groups work to stifle economic and industrial progress wherever they find it to inhibit the successful advancement of peoples in developing nations, inevitably making mankind a second class citizen of planet Earth." - Dr. Jay Lehr
