Message | It is vitial that we roll back the state and allow people to take control over their own lives. We cannot go on with a system whereby people take money from hardworking tax payers, or burden employers with minimum wages or spend billions upon billions on unnecessary pension funds when the private sector can cater for such arrangements. We need to cut out the state where possible, give more power to the people and make people more socially responsible and socially aware for their actions, their finances and their own situation. The taxpayer should not have to fund schemes for people and constantly be burdened. There are many countries without a minimum wage and with a private sector pension scheme, the people within their countries live often better than our own pensioners who find their state pension not to be enough and have to resort to private pensions anyway. It is time for this pragmatic change. Patsy Davidson, Shadow Trade and Industry. |

Message | Typical, without even listening to the debate the CMP goes against the proposals. More burden on the taxpayer, more burden on the state, more burden on the hardworking individual and less work for private sector. How could they ever think they were a Conservative Party? They are a laughable excuse and lost almost 10 seats for a reason. Patsy Davidson, Shadow Trade and Industry. |

Message | "The CMP remains dedicated to small Government and free choice. We therefore shall oppose any attempt to force individuals into saving for their retirement via private schemes. There need always be a choice." Senator Christian Niras, Shadow Secretary of State for Finance and Economics |

Message | The SDLP agrees that Solentians must be socially responsible for their social and financial welfare. However, we cannot let people fall through the cracks, become destitute and a danger upon both themselves and society in general. The SDLP believes in voluntary superannuation and if this is not enough for an individual to subsist by, an extra indexed government allowance, this is by no means an extreme policy to support. Taxpayers deserve the right to a pension at the end of the working lives and equally we must also look after those who for whatever reason find it difficult to function in our society. The Conservative Party's policy will give more power to SOME people, whilst leaving many without a regular roof over their head. It is for these reasons that the SDLP will be voting with an emphatic no. Carol Edwardes SDLP Health and Social Services Spokesperson |
