Message | This bill aims to compromise on the issue of immigration. All skilled and qualified immigrants should be accepted into our nation. But also those fleeing war, poverty and presecution should be allowed to reside here. However this bill also recognises the need for labourers, farmers and manual workers so it proposes these people be given residence here on 5 year visa's, which can be extended. |

Message | We do not agree with this. The first part is pretty much our bill, so obviously we agree with that. However, if we allow more manual labourers and farmers into our country it will ruin those industries, driving wages down and causing suffereing and unemployment for the immigrants and the Dorvikians. |

Message | Some research I found : "Hunt (1992): Repatriation to France of Algerians of European origin (because of the Algerian independence in 1962) Timing was exogenous, location was to a large extent determined by the proximity from the port of arrival and the climate. She uses the temperature as an instrument for immigration. Findings: A 1 percentage increase in the repatriate share reduced the native wage by at most 0.8 percent and raised the unemployment rate of natives by 0.2 percentage points" Friedberg, QJE (2001): Mass immigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union to Israel in the nineties Migration inflow of unprecedented magnitude: 711 000 immigrants entered Israel between 1990 and 1997 The Israeli population at the end of 1989 was 4.56 million with an average annual growth rate of around 1.4-1.8% The 1990-91 wave of immigration increased the population almost instantly by 7.6%! The total immigration flow constitutes 16% of the labour force of the pre-migration population of Israel Exogeneity of timing (unexpected lifting of emigration restrictions in the Soviet Union, Israel imposed no entry conditions and no waiting periods) Exceptionally high level of education: half of them had held academic and managerial positions before immigrating At the beginning, they may compete with low-skilled workers because they lack skills (language, etc.). They will progressively climb the occupational ladder. Ideal “natural experiment”. From Friedberg (2001), Page 1378 |

Message | Two examples of how increased immigration does lead to lower wages and higher unemployment! We are supposed to be the capitalist pigs that are the enemies of the common people, and yet it is you liberals and socialists that are lowering the wage. Plus, if that wealth redistribution bill passes the govt will have to subsidise all this! |

Message | It looks like the unemployment rate was positively affected and the average wage rate fell after the entry of Russian immigrants. Thats from the Isreal-Russia example. |
