MessageThis is far too extreme a measure in our opinion. An official state religion? All schools required to be religious in nature? Mandatory school prayers? While the great majority of our people are culturally Jewish, this is a secular state which does not compel anyone to adhere to a particular creed. While it does not explicitly require membership in the Jewish faith, this bill places Judaism at such an advantage that dissent from that faith is seriously imperiled.

It is time to recognise that a substantial portion of our population is secular-minded, whether they be atheist, agnostic, practising Jews or members of other faith communities. Their rights and freedoms must be respected.

MessageWe are willing to compromise on school prayer and religious schools. The Jewish faith would not be the only one benefiting from educating people in their faith. Atheists and Agnostics would have their own schools. To give a Jewish example, there would still be Reform Jewish schools; those with more secular beliefs could have their own schools.
