Bill: Repeal of Gun Prohibition

Details

Submitted by[?]: removed

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2033

Description[?]:

This bill is designed to repeal the rather hasty prohibition of civilian-owned weaponry proposed earlier, which appears to have passed primarily because key members of the DLP and other parties were absent at the vote. We at the DLP are committed to allowing the individual Dorvik citizen the ability to defend themselves in the event of crime, enemy invasion or a runaway government. However, for forensic and bureaucratic purposes, the licensing requirements should remain.

Message"[It] appears to have passed primarily because key members of the DLP and other parties were absent at the vote" 72% of seats voted against this so this isnt true - no point proposing it unless a load of people flip-flop on the issue.

MessageThinking of another bill... But regardless, the disarming of civilians in a country that depends on a militia and armed citizens for defense and crime prevention is ridiculous. We have a rather small police force (something the DLP would like to keep this way unless Dorvik encounters another drastic population boom) and it is important that an informed, regulated, armed citizenry is able to deal with threats foreign and domestic.

MessageNot anymore, we now have a standing army :-) We also made a bill increasing the police and arming them I beleive although I cant remember if it passed...think it did.

MessageSeems like the standing army was created because guns were criminalized. Allowing the militia to legally assemble again would remove the need for the standing army. Why have a standing army of 250,000 and appear aggressive when we could have available defenses of millions of determined militiamen?

MessageBesides, even with a more modernized police force citizens will be stuck with criminals for a considerable amout of time until help arrives. It is unfair and unrealistic to expect law-abiding citizens face intruders or other criminals or enemies of the state unarmed and forced to wait for government help.

MessageNo, we need a standing army and the NDU aims to increase the number of troops. Taking guns out of the equation makes for a less violent society.

MessageBullpocky, the militia system has been tried and true. The Swiss have machine guns and they aren't in constant warfare; Canada has nearly as many guns as the US and they have much less crime. What's more, most crimes are committed with smuggled or improvised weaponry anyways; we aren't saving our citizens from themselves, we're opening them up to attack.

MessageAnd no, we don't need a standing army, unless you intend to go on the offensive. A militia system is a very effective method of deterring attack, which seems to be what everyone is constantly talking about and saying nukes is the answer...

MessageThe Swiss have never been invaded because there was no reason to invade, not because foreigners are quaking in their boots of the Swiss army. We should maintain the right to go on the offensive, after repeling the enemies attack. What if an ally of ours is attacked? What if a regime is committing genocide, should we not intervene? Anyway, thats a different bill.

MessageWe sympathise with your points about giving our citizens the opportunity to fight back should our army be beaten - however I dont think we can rely upon the militia as a first line of defence. We shall agree with this in respects to defending our country.

MessageBy voting No you are opressing your people and removing individual liberty. Not to mention, you are weakening your nation militarily.

MessageSwitzerland borders on Germany, and they are one of the richest nations in the world, controlling a lot of banking. You'd think Hitler would have found some advantages in possessing that. And yet he didn't even consider invading.

MessageIn any case, I haven't heard a good, backed-up reason to NOT allow citizens to own weaponry as long as there is a paper-trail and common-sense restrictions are in place. And yet the GRP, PE, DSD and B2AF have voted no without even a discussion...
