MessageMr Speaker,

Euthanasia poses an ethical and legal quandary so complex that it cannot possibly be resolved by legalization; terminally ill people and their close relatives simply cannot be in a position to make rational, level-headed decisions of such gravity in such dire circumstances, and legal euthanasia gives rise to a host of impenetrable obstacles with respect to criminal justice. As such, we oppose both the current law in this area and the proposed amendment, but the latter moreso. We will oppose this amendment and work to repeal the current law in time.

The RFSP favours palliative care as an alternative to euthanasia which allows terminally ill patients to retain their dignity and live out the rest of their lives in a comfortable environment. However, we do recognize that the issue of euthanasia, being a highly divisive and controversial moral dilemma, is best resolved at the local level; there is simply no need for national legislation on this matter, and local governments will be far better equipped than the federal government to address the concerns of the communities they represent.

Random fact: It is the collective responsibility of the players in a nation to ensure all currently binding RP laws are clearly outlined in an OOC reference bill in the "Bills under debate" section of the nation page. Confusion should not be created by displaying only some of the current RP laws or displaying RP laws which are no longer current.
