Bill: Intelligence Standards Decree
Details
Submitted by[?]: Solentian Socialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 2149
Description[?]:
This would limit the operations of our national intelligence agency to "counterintelligence and surveillance". It is wholly inappropriate for the intelligence agency to be completely unregulated, "permitted by law to undertake all types of covert operations", which can theoretically include assassination, bribery of officials, electoral interference, sabotage, terrorism etc. |

Message | although it is true that an unregulated intelligence agency is less than desirable, we believe that in extreme circumstances, some operations may be necessary to be undertaken by the IA in foreign countries that could pose a threat to our people. |

Message | We understand that a less regulated intelligence agency could be beneficial on certain occasions, but would prefer that it be limited to counterintelligence and foreign surveillance. Thus, we can support this proposal. |

Message | Yes, we believe the downsides of an unregulated intelligence service outweigh its benefits. After all, "extreme circumstances" are not an everyday occurrence. Besides which, "counterintelligence and surveillance" operations would mean the central authorities are aware of any possible threats to the Republic before they cause problems, allowing us to tackle them via more conventional means. |

Random fact: "Treaty-locking", or ratifiying treaties that completely or nearly completely forbid any proposals to change laws, is not allowed. Amongst other possible sanctions, Moderation reserves the discretion to delete treaties and/or subject parties to a seat reset if this is necessary in order to reverse a treaty-lock situation. |
