Bill: Public Electricity Directive
Details
Submitted by[?]: Solentian Socialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2149
Description[?]:
We believe that public services, especially those as important as electricity provision, should be owned and run by the public sector, accountable to the people of the Solentian Republic through their elected government. Private companies hold the acquisition of profit as a greater priority than ensuring long-term and sustainable access on a universal basis. In most other areas, Solentia gives precedent to the public sector. Therefore, we ask this Public Electricity Directive to be approved by the Parliament. This would mean that "small scale private electrical generation is permitted but most energy is generated by a government-owned company", thereby allowing lesser providers to operate, delivering reasonably competitive prices to consumers, while also recognising the superiority of the public sector in the deliverance of vital public services. |

Message | What do our fellow parliamentarians think of changing the Solentian government's policy on energy generation, whereby currently "private and public power stations exist side-by-side", to "all power stations are publicly owned"? The SSP is inclined to believe that something as important as electricity provision should not be left to the private sector, where the pursuit of profit takes priority over ensuring long-term and sustainable access on a universal basis. In most other areas, Solentia gives precedent to the public sector. We are, however, open to suggestions on this matter - perhaps a change to "small scale private electrical generation is permitted but most energy is generated by a government-owned company" would be more appropriate, allowing small providers to operate, thereby ensuring competitive prices, while also recognising the superiority of the public sector in delivering public services. |

Message | We are open to a change to the current policy, and would gladly support "small scale private electrical generation is permitted but most energy is generated by a government-owned company" as opposed to complete nationalization. |

Message | Is that including *partial* nationalization, if such a compromise is necessary to win a parliamentary majority? |
