Details

Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: December 2150
Description[?]:
The SRP proposes that only real, recognized religions be allowed to start their own religious schools. We believe this will help prevent dangerous cults from creating hostile schooling enviorments, while not impeding on the rights of recognized religions. We also propose the following religions be considered recognized religions. Bahá'í Faith Orthodox Bahá'í Faith Islam (All Sects) Judaism (All Sects) Christianity (All Denominations) Samaritans Mandaeanists Rastafarians Black Hebrews Hinduism (All Movements) Ayyavazhi Buddhism (All Schools) Jainism Sikhism Kabir Panth Dadu Panth Zoroastrianism Gnosticism Indigenous Religions (All) Neo-Paganism Judeo-Paganism Neo-druidism Wicca Carvaka Confucianism Deism Fellowship of Reason Spiritual Humanism Mohism Taoism Satanism Arčs Pilgrim Movement Cao Dai Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) Huna Konkokyo Law of One Manichaeism Unitarian Universalism Universal Life Church Tenrikyo Theosophy Seicho-No-Ie |

Message | After looking at past legislation, we have noticed that there was never any major discussion into which religions were recognized. But, this is what the debate phase is for. We could compile a list of them and attach them to this bill. To start off: Christianity (All denominations) Islam Judaism Buddhism Hinduism Any others we're leaving out? |

Message | OOC: I think that we should come up with percentages for each religion. I'd like Quakerism to have at least 2.5% with a 100% growth rate, if that's ok. I think that the RolePlay would be very interesting if we were to have a significant (i.e. 20%+) Quaker population in Aloria. |

Message | OOC: Perhaps recognized religions would be ones with a certain percentage of followers? Having quakers in Aloria is fine with me, of course. Quakerism is a form of christianity, right? (Can't remember off the top of my head...) |

Message | "I and the ICP agree, but only if there is a definitive list of recognized religions attached with the bill. This proposed law should not be used for discriminating against minority religions while still protecting children from the brainwashing of dangerous cults." -- Eric Anderson, Alorian Minister of Education and Culture |

Message | OOC: SRP, yes, that would be a good idea. |

Message | OOC: and yes, Quakers are a branch of Christianity. The reason I asked about having a lot of Quakers is that, in real life, there are around 800,000 of them in the whole world. |

Message | I agree with the AGSP. All religious schools are already strictly regulated, which is bad enough. Do you really think any strictly regulated religious school could be worse than what parents tell their children at home? Regardless of how ignorant or stupid an opinion may seem to the Thought Police in this nation that suppposedly values "freedom", they have every right to those beliefs. Besides that, this bill could well be seen as in direct violation of Section I of the Alorian Bill of Rights, which reads, in part, "The Alorian legislature shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". |

Message | Very well put LCP. |
Date | 16:35:23, December 03, 2005 CET | From | Freedom Party | To | Debating the Recognized Religious Schooling |
Message | Due to the fact that the Alorian Bill of Rights was never fully amended, the Alorian Bill of Rights functions merely as a set of guidelines as to what OUGHT to be legislated, not what CAN be legislated. The Freedom Party is opposed to this legislation, due largely because we believe strongly in freedom of religion, but you nonetheless cannot make the Bill of Rights argument. We are prerfectly happy to propose it so we can pass it. |

Message | Will voting yes make me more or less religious? In the sake of trying to keep the moderate image, I'd vote the more secular option. |

Message | The legislation is fine as it is. |
Date | 22:48:31, December 03, 2005 CET | From | Freedom Party | To | Debating the Recognized Religious Schooling |
Message | While the Freedom Party applauds the comprehensive list of recognised religions, we cannot, in good conscience, vote in favour of this legislation. OOC: Voting "yes" will make you less religious. |

Random fact: Don't put "the" as the first word in your party name, because when parties are referred to in news reports, their names are preceded with "the", e.g. the [Socialist Party] has lost. |
