Description[?]:
THIS IS A DISCUSSION ON INDUSTRIAL POLICY. Industrial policy at the moment dictates that the government only intervenes in the market by "nationalizing failing industries" thought vital to the well being of the economy. In practise, however, such a programme is highly expensive and inefficient. After all, collapsed industries must be rebuilt, which requires greater public spending. In short, it is a losing battle - asking the public sector to repair the damage caused by the incompetence and selfishness of private industry. We must remember that a private industry doesn't care whether the public has access to "vital goods or services". The SSP doesn't believe this is good enough - we believe in the mixed economy. Yes, we recognise the benefit of competition, especially in the service industries. But we also recognise the role of the public sector in ensuring high productivity, high employment and economic stability. To ensure this, intervention in the economy needs to be planned and forward thinking, not a desperate last resort. We believe government policy on this issue should be changed to, "certain industries are owned by the state, all others are under private ownership." Industries vital to the Solentian economy, either due to the goods or services they provide, or their role in lowering unemployment and poverty, should be publicly owned, so as to ensure we are not constantly adapting to fluctuations in the market. The SSP is not advocating the abolition of the market economy. We do, however, believe that a proactive policy towards the economy, including the democratic ownership of vital industries, is necessary to ensure stability and prosperity. Prudence dictates that we cannot turn our heads and ignore the possibility of economic catastrophe taking us unaware. There is not one party in Solentia that doesn't support regulation of some form or another - so we ask you to support us on this issue as partners. Only by recognising the role of the public sector in the market can we ensure that stability, prosperity, accountability and fairness are upheld. |

Message | Sorry, we seem to have moved this to a vote without adding the proposal! If people would mind ignoring this (or voting for it, heh) and make their way to the Trade and Industry (Second) Act, we'd be very grateful. Sorry again - it's very early here!! |

Random fact: It is the collective responsibility of the players in a nation to ensure all currently binding RP laws are clearly outlined in an OOC reference bill in the "Bills under debate" section of the nation page. Confusion should not be created by displaying only some of the current RP laws or displaying RP laws which are no longer current. |
Random quote: "When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'" - Martin Luther King Jr. |
