Bill: Vanguard Trade Unionism Act 3399

Details

Submitted by[?]: Social Renewal Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes the withdrawal from a treaty. It will require half of the legislature to vote in favor[?]. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: October 3399

Description[?]:

The Federally imposed requirement that a vote must be undertaken before a union may strike is unfair and stymies the legitimate actions of the union movement. It undermines the capacity of unions to act quickly and effectively to counter the often reactionary decisions of management.

We beseech the Senate to apply the same legal rationale that applies to the actions of listed companies to unions. If management or union leadership make a decisions unpopular with workers or stockholders they are accountable after the fact at their respective board and leadership elections.

We propose that our policy be changed to 'Trade Unions are not required by law to hold a ballot before striking', however, as this contradicts our treaty obligations under the 'Rights of the Workers' treaty, we seek first to rescind the treaty.

MessageMr. Senate Warden,

While the AGS understands the intention of the SRP in proposing withdrawal, we are hesitant to 'throw the baby out with the bath water,' so to speak. The treaty in question does much to protect the rights of the workers, and should not be repealed.

Random fact: Parties have the ability to endorse another party's candidate for the Head of State election (if there is one). This adds a strategic element to the elections.
