Bill: International Fair Trade Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Solentian Socialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2154
Description[?]:
Currently, the Solentian Republic only introduces reciprocal tariffs on imports. This is a sensible policy, however it remains intrinsically tied to the maintenance of free trade, which we believe to be inherently flawed. As an alternative, the SSP proposes we allow the government to impose "tariffs and quotas in certain areas" - a small but vital difference. Like our Parliament's previous decision to nationalize specific industries, we believe this change is necessary to ensure the continued productivity of those enterprises which are necessary for the general economic well being of Solentia, and therefore the material wealth and security of our working population. This does not establish total state control over the movement of goods into Solentia. However, it does allow for those industries, which provide vital goods or services, or serve as large employers, to be protected from overwhelming foreign competition, when the government believes that said competition would in fact be against the public interest. We therefore ask our colleagues to approve the IFTA. |
