Description[?]:
The issue of alcohol regulation is one that will divide this parliament as much as it divides our citizens. But I would ask Honourable members to look at this issue from a medical, rather than political point of view. Obviously excessive consumption of alcohol can cause damage to one's health, but our citizens are aware of this and do not need restrictions on the sale of alcohol to understand it. There are many things we do in our everyday lives that could cause some sort of harm to us if we do them too frequently or excessively- or too little. This includes things like eating fatty foods, as well as a lack of exercise. However, it is neither practical or desirable for a government to legislate and control everything our citizens do which could harm their health. For instance, it would be impossible for the government to mandate citizens to do a certain amount of exercise or get a certain amount of sleep each night, even though this may benefit their health. This is the same with alcohol- restricting its sale does not do anything to improve our citizens' health. Julie Smith MP Health and Social Services Minister (PP) |

Message | Mr Speaker, I applaud the Minister for this common-sense proposal and her convincing arguments against nanny-statist tactics. The people do not need the government as a permanent moral judge, and they are mature enough to handle their personal health without the state looking over their shoulder and trying to regulate their personal behavior. Dr. Howard Thornton MP Member for Loren GNP Health Spokesman |

Message | Mr. Speaker, this is an irresponsible and dangerous proposal which would turn Dranish towns and cities into no-go areas in the evenings. It is important to regulate venues which sell alcohol in order to ensure they maintain an orderly atmosphere and do not continue to serve alcohol to people who are already inebriated. If the authorities do not have the power to licence establishments and to threaten to revoke those licences, we will see hundreds of unruly pubs and clubs springing up all over Dranland. A vote for this Bill is a vote for drunken and disorderly behaviour. Antonio Benandez MP (Leader of the DSP) |
