Message | Der Oppositionschef, Frau Dr. Leah Schiffer MR (Anderinch Herzogwalt): "Mr Speaker, I am sure the entire house will join me in expressing my deep sadness at the news of the death of Thomas Michels, and will wish to join me in heartfelt condolences towards his family. In life, Thomas Michels was a remarkable man: an intellectual turned freedom fighter, who was never quite at ease in the world of party politics. Though he was, for his entire life, a member of my party, I feel he belonged more still to the entirety of the 15th of September Movement than simply the Hosianisch-Demokratisches Verbund, and I am sure members on all sides of the House will join me in saying that we owe a lot to his actions and his courage as Chairman of the National Council, as well as his agency as our first Governor-General. With Thomas Michels, this country has lost a father figure. When the government cracked down on the protestors on the 15th of September, 3411, Thomas Michels and his fellow founders of the Movement made sure they didn't scatter by the blow, but stuck together, forged into a single movement continuing the peaceful activism for democracy and freedom that eventually won the day. Whether you are a Social Democrat, Hosian Democrat or Libertarian; Republican or Monarchist, I am sure we will all agree that his role was of pivotal importance. Therefore, I rise today to commend the motion in my name to accord to him the honour of a state funeral to the Diet." |
