Bill: Representation of the Younger Generation
Details
Submitted by[?]: Protectorate Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: March 2051
Description[?]:
Seeing how some of Malivia's youth have grown interested in politics, we see no reason to restict the right to vote from them. We do not expect the majority of the population granted the right to vote with this bill to exercise it, rather those who wish it should not be denied. |

Message | This is such a preposterously bad idea the PP should be drummed out of government for proposing such nonsense. A basic understanding of child development would show that, biologically and cognitively, teenagers are actually incapable of appreciating the consequences of their actions. They can understand extended causality in theory, but overwhelmingly are not yet able to apply that to individual circumstances. This is why teenagers often fall into the 'it won't happen to me' fallacy. This is why we have a seperate criminal justice system for juvenilles, as well as why we don't give them the ability to fully consent. If anything, we should be pushing the age of majority back, but failing that, it is utter folly to give more rights to humans we know for a fact are unable to use them responsibly. |

Message | I thought younger voters tended to vote left, so why in the world would you turn this down LeviP? Although many teenagers are incapable of making a decision, those are the ones that are not goning to be voting. |

Message | ooc: LevP, you're a bit of a bore you know? its really frightening to think that this may be the way you treat your students for coming up with an idea you don't like. ic: It would be pointless to push the voting age anywhere at this point, forward or back. As I have outlined in previous discussions like this, it doesn't significantly change who gets elected because young people rarely vote and when they do they vote the same way as their parents. Also, to the SRP's comments about young people voting left, those people tend to be college age and are in college or have graduated from high school. Then they grow up and become more right wing when they realize the world isn't such fluffy place where all the social programs you can dream up will work out. |

Message | We 'turn this down' because it's irresponsible and a bad idea. Do some research into child development, it's a terrible, terrible idea. The age of majority is more than just casting ballots, its about the age at which someone is responsible enough to consent to contracts, to fully appreciate their rights and responsibilities, to live as an independant person. Is this legislature really going to say, with a straight face, that 16 years old is the point at which a person is ready to take on those responsibilities? If certain parties were concerned about compelling students to remain in school after becoming legal adults, then surely this bill is folly, as it would guarantee every high school junior and senior would be a legal adult. Then what? This is a terrible idea, and hopefully the PP will withdraw this proposal in the very near future. |

Message | How does this bill change the ed age? We already require students to remain in eduaction until 20, after they are adults. |

Message | ooc: FRP, no need for that. ic: We cannot support such an initiative at the present time. |
