Bill: Cleansing The Media Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Totalitarian Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2157
Description[?]:
Recently, a number of critical articles have been printed regarding Gaduridos' handling of Kalistan's threats. They refer to our nation as fascist, a allegation that is absolutely untrue. The Totalitarian Party feels we must ensure none of their lies reach our nation's citizens. A small number may believe these lies, causing them to create movements calling for "Peace" and "Tolerance". We cannot allow these people to cause dissent and unrest. We cannot allow a few misguided citizens to disrupt our nation. We must ensure our nation's citizens hear only the truth. Article one: Internet censorship will involve blocking any international media websites which have previously spread falsehoods regarding our nation. Each ISP must employ a filter utilising a current version of a blacklist compiled by the government. A government department will continually search the internet for lies concerning our nation, ensuring the blacklist is able to block all threats. Sites hosted in Gaduridos will be exempt from censorship, but any falsehoods spread may be investigated. Sites owned by citizens but hosted overseas will still be subject to censorship. It can be difficult to verify the true identity of a site's owner, especially on free hosts, and the Gaduri owner would be able to allow foreigners to post articles to his website, allowing them to circumvent the controls in place. Article two: Foreign media will be examined for any falsehoods. |

Message | We disagree strongly. If we pass this bill, those referring to us as fascists would be correct. Dissent and unrest are not only natural aspects of a democracy, they are vital parts - if we cannot trust out own citizens, we have failed as a government and we would be descending into despotism. |

Message | Some regulation is NOT fascist. If this passed it would be done democratically via the voice of the people's constituents. By God, is there any national pride in you... you who are so quick to even label your own people as proven fascists simply because two acts are passed that promote some regulation?! |

Message | This would be a step above 'some regulation'. Freedom of press and speech are central tenets of our democracy, of which we can be rightly proud, and to make the first steps to curtail them would be to lead our nation down a very dark path indeed. Our party would like to point out that in history, numerous dictatorships have been installed in an initially democratic way, which have then dismantled the very institutions that brought them to power. We, those chosen by our citizens to safeguard their freedom, should not give in to impulses to control those who we represent. |

Message | Your party obvious;y considers 'Fascism', to be one step toward regulation that you personally do not approve. |

Message | We consider any intrusions upon the freedom of speech and press to be a bad step in that direction, yes. To make an informed choice when the time for voting has come, our citizens deserve to be fully informed. If we cannot trust our citizens to make a fair judgement, we do not deserve their trust. If the government is that concerned with our citizens getting a false image of their actions, this party can only recommend that the government launch a campaign to give our citizens the correct facts. We are not opposed to prosecuting those who disturb public order or work against our state; however, we are opposed to letting this small minority force our hand against all our citizens. |

Message | This bill does not attempt to restrict the citizens' right to free speech. It is restricting filthy foreigners and their filthy lies. I will add to the bill description to ensure this is clear. |
Date | 00:46:55, December 17, 2005 CET | From | Post-Revolutionary Pragmatic Party | To | Debating the Cleansing The Media Act |
Message | Regardless, it is still aimed at our citizens and is a definite step in the wrong direction... |
