Bill: Cabinet Holbrooke I
Details
Submitted by[?]: Grand National Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill presents the formation of a cabinet. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. Traditionally, parties in the proposal vote yes, others (the opposition) vote no. This bill will pass as soon as the required yes votes are in and all parties in the proposal have voted yes, or will be defeated if unsufficient votes are reached on the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 3523
Description[?]:
Mr Speaker, I hereby submit this proposal for a coherent government coalition to the assembly, recognizing the joint support from the parties included for a peaceful and sensible foreign policy that continues to adhere to the idea of neutrality even though its formalization may no longer be given. Even though this coalition falls short of a majority of its own by a couple of seats, I expect Parliament not to obstruct this attempt of forming a government that has the support of the Head of State. John Holbrooke President of Dranland |

Message | Mr Speaker, Come on now Mr President, you enjoyed obstructionism when you were in opposition yourself, give us a fair chance. We also oppose your 'sensible foreign policy' so Nay from us. Jose Manana III MP Minority Leader Member for Elbian |

Message | Mr. Speaker, we are not prepared to obstruct the formation of a government by the President as it is a Presidential prerogative to shape his own government. However, nor are we willing to support a government which is, more likely than not, going to reverse the achievements of the previous government in expanding social justice. Therefore, we will abstain on any motion of confidence. Adrian Mendiola DPP Chair |

Message | OOC: Given that this requires an absolute majority, it turns out that we ARE obstructing your Cabinet. LOL. |

Message | OOC: Yes, we now have a US style deadlock between Parliament and the Presidency. |

Message | Mr Speaker, we did not expect enthusiasm sparkling from the DAL and DPP benches regarding this cabinet proposal anyway, but I am sure that other parties in this assembly will be more sympathetic towards ending the political paralysis resulting from a presidential/governmental division and are therefore confident that this proposal will eventually pass. Message | OOC: Shame that the game doesn't allow the Pres to veto legislative decisions. This would make the whole thing more interesting. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, we find it hypocritical that the President would be so concerned about "political paralysis", when, when the Goodwin Government was in power, he did everything he could to obstruct and paralyse the business of government. Does the President feel that even the operation of the institutions of government are exclusively for the benefit of the RfR? Adrian Mendiola DPP Chair |

Message | OOC: No, I don't think so, if yes, I don't know how it works. Mr Speaker, if the Rt. Hon. Gentleman believes voting against bills and proposals that are diametrically opposed to my party's ideology, which is what we did under Alliance rule, is obstructionism, then it is rather him who has a false perception of the operation of the political institutions in this country. The Alliance had a majority together with its partners, and we did nothing to rally against their government formation apart from a symbolic 'nay' vote. John Holbrooke President of Dranland |

Message | Mr. Speaker, if the RfR and its allies had a majority, one could only guess at how long they would hold up the formation of any sort of functioning government for. Adrian Mendiola DPP Chair |

Message | Mr Speaker, the opposite is the case though, and it is DPP and DAL who are trying to foil a cabinet renewal that would end this division, so therefore the Rt. Hon. Gentleman's hypothetical musings are pointless. John Holbrooke President of Dranland |

Message | Mr. Speaker, I do not particularly feel the urge to quote the President, but I would refer him to his own words about voting against bills - or governments, for that matter - that hardly represent our most cherished values. Adrian Mendiola DPP Chair |

Message | OOC: Indeed, let's stop it at this point. Holbrooke used to be more vitriolic, wasn't he? Now he has to put on a presidential air. |

Message | OOC: Oh, I forgot to name the remaining cabinet posts. I though I'd take both CCS an CLS due to activity issues, leave the VP to the PP and the HC to the KDF. So, this would mean: Vice President - Joaquin Banez (the PP Chairman) Chief Cabinet Secretary - Thomas Trelawney, once again Chief Legislative Secretary - Bernard Hammersmith Majority (?) Leader: Jeannine LeCoultre Speaker of Parliament: We haven't really agreed on how to nominate a Speaker, but why not Fukuda (if he doesn't become DPP Chair). I can't really think of any other bipartisan character. As you can see, most of the people I nominated have been around for a really long time. Should the Holbrooke administration fail, I'll switch the whole leadership, but so far I've been to lazy to make up new characters. |
