Message | Herr Präsident, Frau Stadtmann will probably be rather pleased to see the bill my parliamentary party presents to the House today. In an earlier debate with my right honourable colleague, Frau Nishimura, she highlighted an important issue: that of the adverse effects of the otherwise laudable policy we have towards wage levels. While we think everyone has the right to a decent salary, we also believe that work should pay and that it should pay in proportion to the contribution made by an employee. In terms of spending power, the current policy does not deliver this: a living wage drives up costs and drives up prices, either leading to inflation or negating the effect on the living standards and spending power of workers. Additionally, and more importantly, in many workplaces across the country we see employees who could put more love and involvement into their job but won't because they already have a perfectly suitable income. A little encouragement would be welcome, we believe. Do not get us wrong, Herr Präsident. We are not giving employers carte blanche to exploit their workers. We are returning to the principle that work should pay, and that hard work and dedication should pay more. That is why we propose this reasonable deregulation in wage standards: the House will note that a single full time worker can still support a family of four on the minimum wage we're proposing, and that's the way it should be. Our economy depends on the industry of hard-working Crownlanders. Far from taking away from their importance, we are rewarding them for it. If hard work pays off, they will go to work motivated to contribute to their workplace and their society. And that is what we are all trying to achieve. |
