Bill: Lowering the age of adulthood
Details
Submitted by[?]: Democratic-Republican Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: December 2163
Description[?]:
We of the Democratic-Republican Party believe that the age of adulthood is too high currently. Ageism exists as a barrier within our nation. While at a certain age persons cannot think for themselves, so children must always be considered, we believe that the age of 18 is an arbitrary age, that is too high. We propose the lowering of this age to 16. |
Proposals

Message | And what evidence do you have that would support this claim. The age is maintained becasue of the issue of insurence, drinking, and military service as well as other issues. |

Message | I trust my 16-year old son far more than I trust some of the idiotic drunk 40-year-olds on the road, with my car, and with my government. -D-R Party leader Tobias Chaim |

Message | We would be tempted by this if their was ANY evidence (apart from the fact that Mr Chairm trusts his son more than a drunken 40yr old) that a person is equally able to fulfill the responsibilities of adulthood at 16 as they currently do at 18. Remember this affects many things. Alcohol Drugs Tobacco Military Service Voting Pornography Sexual Relations Housing Taxation Pension To name but a few. |

Message | Of course you would trust your son more...but if he was to commit a crime at the age of 16, would you allow him to serve time in a big boy prison...if it was a sever crime like rape or murder, would you let him do time in the Maxium Security prison. |

Message | There are 16-year olds across Hutroi whom I trust far more than these. Also, most of the decisions we make affect the children more than they affect us. It is not democracy to make decisions for someone. And to respond to the Libertarians: Alcohol - They are harmed no more than their elders Drugs - the current Canabis laws do not prohibit children from using it. Tobacco - Is used at this age widely anyway because of it's status as an act of "rebellion". If we eliminate it's "rebellion" appearance, fewer would start. Military Service - is still voluntary in Hutori and should remain such. Voting - I trust the average teenager as much as I trust the average Hutorian. Pornography - is viewed illegally anyway. Sexual Relations - will happen with or without regulations. Housing - In case you didn't notice, mandatory education is still up until 18, so they would most likely still live at home. Taxation - if living at home, could still file with their parents. Pension - if they work, then they should be able to pay into their pension, even before adulthood. |

Message | Answer: If my son committed one of those heinous crimes, I would have disowned him and care nothing for him, even sending him into such a prison. |

Message | If he committed such a heinous crime, then he deserves not to live more than any other heinous criminal. Where I say "care nothing for him", I use a term in my group's language meaning "ignore him", though literally meaning "care nothing". A heinous criminal, may they be the guy across Hutori, the guy next-door, or my own son, must be punished as is good and right before our law. |

Message | Fair enough...but im still against it...sorry. |
Date | 21:15:54, December 26, 2005 CET | From | Libertarian Party | To | Debating the Lowering the age of adulthood |
Message | We still see no proof that a 16 year old is able to carry the responsibilities, and unless we see such proof we too will oppose this. |
Date | 16:23:59, December 29, 2005 CET | From | Democratic-Republican Party | To | Debating the Lowering the age of adulthood |
Message | We see no proof that an 18-year-old or even a 21-year-old is able either. |
