Bill: Censoring Minister-President Korbinian Meissner, 3622

Details

Submitted by[?]: Liberale Volkspartei

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 3623

Description[?]:

Herr Präsident,

at a time when the country is mourning the the Mikado, the far-left Minister-President of Kuratha has displayed gross insensitivity by exploiting this sad event politically in order to push his radical agenda of Republicanism, and, as Herr Urbanek of the NBF has already rightly criticized, essentially celebrating the death of His Majesty as an opportunity to dismantle the monarchy. Now, while we respect everyone's right to voice his opinion on any subject including, of course, the monarchy, we feel that the Diet should at least reprimand Herr Meisner for his gross misconduct, lack of basic respect, and failure to respond in a statesmanlike manner to the death of a national figure of unity. This motion aims to express this house's disapproval of Herr Meisner's highly inappropriate comments, and furthermore encourages the government of Kuratha to issue an apology for the malicious remarks made by its its Minister-President.

MessageHerr Präsident, the NBF fully endorses the motion tabled by the Vize-Staatsministerin. Herr Meisner's comments were insensitive, disrespectful and inappropriate, and I join the call to censure him and to call upon him to apologise for his absolutely odious statements and consider the possibility of resignation. In a time of national grief as a result of the passing of His late and esteemed Majesty, it is unacceptable for senior officials to be maligning the institution of the monarchy and showing such perverse glee.

MessageHerr Präsident,

Like many others, I disagreed with Herr Meissner's comments and felt their timing was regrettable. He was, of course, speaking in a personal capacity, and not on behalf of Solidarity or the regional government in Kuratha. However, it is possible to oppose a view without needing to go to the lengths of voting for a motion of censure in the Reichstag. The representatives of the people have more important things to consider - surely - than this. In order to be meaningful when it really matters, motions of censure should be rare, and with respect to Frau von Gehfield, this is not the right occasion on which to introduce one.

MessageHerr Präsident, the statements made by Herr Meisnner brought disgrace to the government of Kuratha and caused very substantial offence to many Crownlanders. It is deplorable that he would have thought it proper to insult the Imperial Family in the moment of their grief, to refuse to attend the funeral of His late Majesty and to divisively politicise a tragedy which should have allowed this nation to unite to reflect on its joint cultural and political heritage. If a private citizen had said what Herr Meisnner did, that would have been unfortunate, but for a public figure of his seniority to have done so is absolutely unacceptable, and if the offensive behaviour and misconduct of a senior government official should not be the subject of parliamentary censure, then nothing should. I ask the Leader of the Opposition, will he unreservedly condemn Herr Meisnner's comments, or will he continue to condone them with only the slightest slap on the wrist?

MessageHerr Präsident,

As a person, I was disgusted by what Herr Meissner said. Whatever you think of the monarchy, the now-Shineichi Emperor Akihiko was a great man and as warm an Emperor as we have seen since Kurosawa the great. It is unbecoming of any statesman to vilify such a man for political reasons as the nation grieves. As a Septembrist, however, I must recognise that Herr Meissner was expressing his personal opinion and that since the September revolution such opinions Republican or otherwise have been sacrosanct.

While I will therefore vote yes to the motion, I do so not to condemn the man or his republicanism. I do so to refute the words with which Herr Meissner expressed himself as I would morally condemn it if anyone gloated at the family of those recently deceased with no reason.

MessageHerr Präsident,

My colleague Herr Meissner did not intend to "vilify" the late Mikado or to "insult" the royal family, nor do I believe he intended to cause offence to Crownlanders - although I acknowledge some of the public do feel offended. As I said, he was speaking purely on his own behalf, not on behalf of Kuratha or on behalf of Solidarity. His views are not my views, and are not the views of Solidarity either.

MessageHerr Präsident,

I vigorously condemn this attack on free speech, shame on all of you! Can't you take a little bit of opposition, what are we expecting later, expulsion of members who voted against government bills, or putting people in to jail for daring to criticise the system. As the party of freedom and common sense, we are condemning this attempt to censuring a man who used his democratic right to criticise the system and his right for freedom of speech, as the Radicals, we condemn this pathetic attempt to silence the opposition against constitutional monarchy, leave this chamber in protest.

MessageHerr Präsident, Herr Meisnner is free to speak. And we are free to speak out against what he says. And we are free to do so by tabling a motion saying exactly that. It's not as if we're about to shoot him. The silly hysterics and childish theatrics of the ehrw. member and her colleagues demonstrate the lack of seriousness and rationality with which they regard the political process.

MessageHerr Präsident,

I quite agree that all who wish to speak against Herr Meissner should be free to do so, and that the Reichstag is entitled, if it so decides, to debate and vote on a motion of censure against him. What I have to challenge is the presumption that this is the right priority for us to be focussed on at this time. With all of the difficulties ordinary Hulstrians & Gao-Sotans are facing at the moment, should we really be devoting so much time and energy to a discussion like this? There is so much else the Reichstag could be doing and achieving.
