Message | Mr. Speaker, The LSP believes that a woman's right to privacy and freedom of choice is a fundamental right. However, we do not believe that it is one that should be exercised with no government oversight. Our current laws allow a woman to terminate her pregnancy whenever she chooses with the taxpayer providing the funding. We see our current policy as well intentioned. We also see it as going to an unnecessary extreme. We propose what the LSP sees as a common sense reform. This bill will restrict the window a woman is allowed to seek an abortion to a term before fetal viability outside the womb. In addition, we recognize that many citizens object to this procedure and ask that taxpayer funding be restricted to those women who would otherwise be prevented from exercising this right without it. Respectfully, Elizabeth Myers, LSP Adviser for Health and Social Services |
