Bill: Restoring Youth Freedom

Details

Submitted by[?]: FJS Freedom, Justice, Sustainability

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 3811

Description[?]:

Everyone should be able to choose their path in life. No-one should be forced to spend years of their lives in the military or the national service. Both are valuable and encouraged, but shouldn't be mandatory. Some people might choose to travel the world, or start a business, or be in a band, or a million other things.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Public service is a way for students to give back to society, after they have taken advantage of state-funded education and social programmes. I don't want to hear the bourgeois nonsense about travelling the world. We're educating Lodamese citizens to develop Lodamun. All we ask is for a limited time of public service, whether through military service or civilian national service. I do not see the problem with this.

At school, they learn mostly theories. Sometimes they learn more practical things, but they don't get a chance to use their education in a working environment. By doing public service, they get to interact with experienced adults in the field that they choose to work in. They get to learn skills from these adults, and they get integrated into the working world.

We don't force them to do this for free. We pay them. This is another good thing. They are guaranteed an income for at least a year after leaving school, and they get a feel of the workplace so that they can be more sure of what job they want to have.

MessageMr. Speaker,

All of which has many merits we agree. However, we don't agree with forcing them to do it. How do they pay back the investment that our society has made in public education? By getting jobs and paying taxes.

MessageMr. Speaker,

The FJS is just now talking about getting jobs and paying taxes? At first, I thought they wanted students to "travel the world" and other nonsense. Also, how does doing work stop one from being in a band? The FJS needs to make solid arguments, and stop wasting the Presidium's time with its nonsense.

Doing public service is a job, and it also gives graduates more preparation for other jobs. The current law also guarantees the graduates income for at least a year. Who says they are guaranteed to find jobs if they are left alone?

At first the FSJ wanted to force every single working citizen to have union membership. Now they say we shouldn't force this. The FSJ never seems to see the long term benefits of something. Misguided leadership. We sit back look at them in the Presidium and laugh.

I've heard that it is possible for people to go backpacking in other countries for a time, and then return to Lodamun and become employed. It is not an either or. For that matter, people might want to get jobs immediately after they complete their education. Others may well wish to join the military, or enlist in public service. There are many different paths to walk, the mandate your authoritarian parties support gives them only two paths. Freedom allows them many paths to choose from.

Citizens have their whole lives to go back packing and swimming in lakes of blue shimmering water. Im a woman leading the NDP. We are not an authoritarian party. NDP leadership has no time to be authoritarian. Because we are working hard for Lodamun citizens. The FJS argument is weak in this regard. I back our coalition partner GNRG view.
