Bill: Promotion of Consumption Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: National Republican Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 3845

Description[?]:

Luxury goods are all those that are not essential like food and basic clothing. They are things like cars and fashion and leisure objects and almost everything that makes an economy run. They're not mansions or yachts for the rich, but rather the things that we spend much of our money on. Our current level of tax for these "luxuries" is awful and impedes economic growth.

MessageWe believe that the levels of income tax and spending in our proposed budgets leave no room for a reduction in any sales tax at this time. After the next election the TRP would seek to deliver a decrease in the non-luxury sales tax rather than the luxury sales tax, funded through a most increase in the income tax rates.

MessageThe NRP plans raises much more revenue than the TRP one, and would leave room for such a cut as we have proposed. The essential goods tax is already pretty low and we ought to balance essential and non-essential rate cuts. Obviously, essential goods should have much less of a tax on them, but a nearly addition quarter tax on non-essential goods (think iPhones, cars, television sets, computers, etc.) is absurd and hurts our consumption more than the 7% on food and basic clothing.

MessageThe only way that the luxury goods sales tax can be cut is if income tax is increased on the wealthier citizens of Telamon. It is unfair to expect the poorest to help cover the cost for luxury items that they cannot afford.

MessageThe income tax on the wealthy is already going up. Even if the NRP proposal were to accepted, the rate would jump from 20% to 45% for the wealthy and the rate on the poor would fall from 16% to 6%. No matter what, the poor are going to see steep reduction and the rich a steep rise. The luxury goods here would also benefit the middle class, a bracket that has been undervalued in this debate. The poor are not being forced to cover a tax cut for the rich - they are being asked to pay less while the middle class expands its purchasing power.
