Bill: Abolition of Nuclear Weapons Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: ÖkoLinks

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 3876

Description[?]:

Abolishing nuclear weapons would enable huge sums of money to be reinvested in critical areas such as health and education. These weapons are highly unlikely to be used but if they were, the effects of radiation on our fellow mankind would cause untold suffering, death, famine and climate change many years after the initial explosion.

MessageThe Watermelons seem to lack an understanding of the importance of a deterrence capability for national defense - not surprising, given the Eco-Left's propensity for placing the safety of polar bears and whales above the safety of Republican citizens. The government of the Republic shall not use nuclear weaponry except in the most dire circumstances, so our watery, melony friends can rest assured that the threat of nuclear fallout are nothing but a leftist scare tactic.

MessageThe protection of citizens is, of course, paramount, but these weapons are not at all necessary and are quite simply dangerous. I would like to ask the Minister of Defence why he would prefer Darnussia possessing a costly arsenal of bombs that will never be used over investing huge sums of money into the health and education services?

Protecting our citizens also comes in the form of social measures, not just possessing weapons that are more than capable of destroying the entire planet.

MessageOOC: Elia isn't actually MoD, as the cabinet didn't pass. My mistake.

IC: From what information does Mr. Müller draw the incorrect conclusion that my party does not believe that social measures are also an important piece of the security question? No bills have allowed us to expound upon our beliefs in these areas, so the Watermelon leader is merely basing his accusations in conjecture, an infirm position. I hope to receive an apology for his presumption.

In any event, these weapons certainly are a necessity. Twenty nations on Terra reserve the right to use nuclear weaponry for any reason, a large plurality of nation states. Most others maintain a nuclear capability but with a few restrictions on their uses. It is a dangerous world, Mr. Müller, and the Republic must be willing and capable of defending herself. Three of our neighbors (Hobrazia and our neighbors across the sea, Beiteynu and Pontesi) maintain unrestricted nuclear arsenals. Luthori and Beluzia too maintain a restricted nuclear arsenal. The threat of nuclear war is only averted by the maintenance of a strong nuclear capability and the willingness to utilize it if absolutely necessary. A ban would be crippling.

MessageWhile the Narikaton nationalists try to scare politicians and the public alike into believing we have a need for weapons that could quite easily destroy the planet they should take note that the government, so early into its reign, is already split over an issue.

MessageOf course, Mr. Müller, the government will never agree one hundred percent of the time. The Centrists and my own party have differing opinions on many issues, and the people of the Republic will see us vote in opposition to one another on many bills in the coming few years. The Centrists and the Nationalists, however, believe in mutual respect and in the future of the Republic. We will work together on issues of central importance to this government, and we will show each other due deference in all matters. Perhaps the Watermelons might learn from our government's maturity.
