Bill: Education Diversity Act, 3887

Details

Submitted by[?]: Borgerlig-Demokratiske Union

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 3887

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

equality of opportunity remains an empty catchword unless we allow an educational diversity that enables every student to be taught to his individual potential. This is not feasible in an environment where the government completely monopolizes education and refuses to even explore alternative options. Thus we propose to legalize charter schools, religious schools and private universities in order to increase choice and competition and to create a more vibrant intellectual culture.

MessageMr Speaker,

When this government talks about opportunity, it means it. This government stands up for a society where every Kazulian gets the chance to enjoy a quality education that will prepare them for life. That cannot happen when the wealthy get access to elite education while everyone else does not. That can only happen when everyone can go to a school or university which is properly funded by the government - funding that was included in the budget, I'm delighted to say, but which hon. members opposite do not support.

I must say, Mr Speaker, that it is a shame that certain hon. members opposite talk about opportunity, what they really want to say is that those who have the means should have the opportunity to gain an advantage over those of more modest means, and those who do not have the means should have the opportunity to try and make do with what they have. It is a fundamentally regressive and unfair ideology that they espouse. We therefore stand against this motion.

MessageMr Speaker,

our goal is to extend school in particular to the poorest citizens, with the introduction of vouchers as a necessary additional step. While Labour is concerned about everyone getting exactly the same education, FV prefers to enable every student to be taught to his individual strengths and talents. The rich can send their kids study abroad if they want to, leaving poor students trapped in failed government schools controlled by the unions and opposed to even the slightest reforms if they cut into the privileges of government employees. Labour is a tool of the teachers' unions, FV is the voice of students and their concerned parents.
