Bill: Utdanningsfrihetslov, 3894 (Freedom of Education Act, 3894)

Details

Submitted by[?]: Folkepartiet (People's Party)

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 3894

Description[?]:

Mr. Speaker,

I was so sad to hear the honourable Communist lady's pain at being illiterate because of having gone to a religious school. While most religious schools are excellent institutions, there is one thing her case raises excellently and that is that while valuable, our religious schools (or charter schools according to other educational philosophies, for that matter), are chronically underfunded. The tremendous contribution they make to the life of our families and communities is thereby undervalued by the state. For the sake of the freedom of education, we need to put their funding on a par with public schools, so there is true freedom of choice for parents in all our communities.

Similarly, we need to empower our schools to provide for all our communities. The ban on school prayer has to end and be replaced with a simple requirement that nobody can be forced to participate in school prayer - let's leave it to schools themselves if this little moment of reflection and introspection fits in with the needs of their pupils. Similarly, should parents or students have a problem reconciling sexual education with their conscience, we should not force them.

FP Leader

MessageMr Speaker,

we are strongly supportive of Article one as school choice is a primary goal of our party, which has long lamented the status quo of students having only the single option of attending their local state-run school, dominated by the unions and shielded from competition. We have some reservations about public funding and would prefer school vouchers to follow a more market-based logic, but this proposal is at least a step in the right direction.

We also support articles two and three, not because we wishes to encourage religious activity or promote a certain kind of sexual morality, but because we oppose state interference with moral believes, regardless whether they target conservative or progressive ideals.

there is no place for religion in our state, hearing this guy being sad about me, then arguing to fund religious schools is a great insult, especially since religious school are outlawed.

There is no point in giving funds to illegal schools,

This is sad proof the government is not strong enough to crack down on these stupid religious school hiding in charter.

If you think lack of money is the reason I did not receive any education, you are wrong, The priests at my school all had their own gold-accessory on themselves and they had money.

Just seeing these reform, I am sick

The governments stance on religious schools : Religious schools are not allowed. so if you admit your charter is religious, you just outlaw it.

MessageMr Speaker,

We would like to applaud FP for this great initiative. As SD, we have been staunch supporters of religious and charter schools. Article 1 clearly defines our perspective of funding schools. Article 2, also grants an option for the teenagers and their parents which is "better than nothing". Despite being anti-sexual education, SD will also support any effort to bring back our morals. We'd only wish Article 3 was completely allowing teacher led prayers, since they mean no harm and prayers are just a basic religious liberty.

As the SD leadership, we are strongly concerned about the language and style used by FKP. We hereby decline to participate with any FKP MPs until they fix their revolting manners.

Our party does not have impose any language or moral values to our deputee, nor to our members, we do not wish to do so because we are not autoritarians,

Also, what is the FKP ? that is not us, the FKA...

MessageMr Speaker,

This government will not stand for the fundamental inequity that would be created by the establishment of a two-tier education system. We are instead committed to an education system where opportunity exists equally for all. It is especially disappointing that the hon. gentleman from the FV [Granlund] seeks to use these measures as a means of breaking the unions. I think that it is very revealing of the hon. member's antipathy towards the interests and rights of working people, in this case teachers, who do very valuable work and who deserve to be applauded, not attacked.

MessageMr Speaker,

unions have their rightful place, but they have no right by subjugating the rest of society to their special interests by monopolizing an area that is crucial to the future of our children, and, together with a government that defends their privileges tooth and nail, dictate to parents and pupils alike what should be an individual decision, namely the way the next generation is educated.

MessageMr Speaker,

Unlike the hon. gentleman [Granlund], we do not see children as merely the chattels of their parents. We welcome parental input in the running of state schools, but at the end of the day we have a social interest, a collective interest, in the future of our country and therefore it is absolutely legitimate for education policy to be decided on a social basis. What the hon. gentleman must realise is that not every government-provided service is a conspiracy or a scam directed against the interests of the people.

MessageMr Speaker,

it is not us who are objectifying children as some good controlled by their parents, it is Labour who is degrading them to the status of a collective resource to be managed by social engineers personfied by the teachers' unions - who can hardly be expected to act in a selfless manner once given absolute control over schools - and their political patrons. We see children as individuals with their very own personal traits and talents, and parents naturally know these characteristics best and thus have the greatest competence to decide what kind of school would best suit their needs and desires. This, however, is not possible if every kind of choice is deliberately suppressed and the ideological implications of crude egalitarianism are prioritized over the need to teach each child to his or her potential.
