MessageMr. Speaker

We would inquire to the Right Honourable Minister of Infrastructure and Transport how the free market can not apply to railways when private rail companies have existed for centuries? Furthermore how can the government improve this in ways the private sector can not?

Minister of Trade and Industry

MessageObviously the government has much better access to investment, and can involve itself in long term strategic planning for the entire country rather than the short sighted quest for company profits, abandoning less profitable routes and failing to adequately invest due to the impact on dividends.

Clearly supply and demand and the invisible hand of the free market are difficult to apply to national infrastructure, how can competition apply to railway stations and railway lines? A different company cannot simply set itself up and demand access to stations and lines, it is well know. That private railway concerns end up operating as monopolies.
