Message | ''We appreciate Livre's support for this law, as well as its remarkable effort in the opposition to a party that actively defends ''squires and landlords'', coincidentally two of the major ''donors'' of political campaigns in this country. But we won't stop fighting. The landless of this country shall have their land! They shall live with dignity!'' João Pedro Coli, PSD secretary-general. . |

Message | "The Tukarese Democratic Union is not defending the interests of land-owners, but the wisdom of local government. In some areas with many large farms it may indeed be a good idea to break up large farms and redistribute the land, while in others, where there are many small and poor units, it may be better to encourage farmers to merge their holding in larger cooperatives where they can work the land together and get better results. In some areas it may be sufficient to aid the poorest farmers, while in other areas additional subsidies for environemtally beneficient crops may be required, or for other crops which are in demand but only grown in insufficient quantities in that area. The democratically elected local governments are better placed to assess the needs of their respective areas and act accordingly than any centralised bureaucracy could ever be." Maurício Santiago, Minister of Food and Agriculture |
