Bill: Criminal Trials (Defence) Act, 3908

Details

Submitted by[?]: Folkepartiet (People's Party)

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 3909

Description[?]:

Mr. Speaker,

I rise to propose to reform the way in which the state appropriates funds to pay for the defence of all defendants in criminal trials. While access to legal counsel is a fundamental right, we believe that at present, subsidising the costs of defence for those rich enough to afford it themselves is unduly wasting resources in my department that could also be used to improve the quality of the available public defence attorneys that help low-income defendants, or more generally to invest in the security of our society by increasing police presence. I hope the House agrees that this is a far better use of the money and that my colleagues will therefore approve of this change in my departmental budget.

Ingbert Mathiassen (FP - Hent)
Minister of Justice

Random fact: It usually takes up to an hour for election results to generate. During this time, the "Next Election" date is put forward a month, which is confusing. Do not worry! In a short time, the election result will generate and the "Next Election" date will then correct itself.
