Bill: Progressive Reform Bill - Agricultural Efficiency

Details

Submitted by[?]: Progressive Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 2172

Description[?]:

We propose to allow the production and sale of genetically modified crops in this country. We have great confidence in the scientific community of Likatonia to keep these crops safe for human consumption and think that this will greatly increase the output from farms as well as increasing the nutritional value of food.

MessageThe AAS absolutely supports. We believe that those who oppose are being somewhat shortsighted... since we have been 'genetically engineering' our crops for milennia, through hybridisation and selective breeding.

MessageBut that is still a relatively natural process compared to the creation of Genetically Modified Crops.

MessageThe CP is correct... however, 'relatively natural' means were fine when our population was a few hundred thousands.

Now, our population is greater than 66 million souls, and our nation is getting hungry.

MessageSo import real food, encourge the consumption of speciality foreign food, don't cultivate garbage that may well have harmful effects.

MessageThe AAS does not see how enhanced food sources equate to 'garbage'. The GM crops we grow, mature faster, produce greater yields, and have better vitamin and mineral capacity. If anything, our GM foods are superior.... and far more financially reasonable than mass importation.

MessageSo there are no side effects whatsoever? No toxic elements in these mutant crops?

MessageThe AAS is unaware of any recognised side-effects. Indeed, looking back over Likatonian history, we had quite a lot of pure research time, when GM products were not for consumption.

We are not saying we should go crazy, 'modifying' every crop just because we can... but it seems redundant to outlaw perfectly healthful products, which could be enjoyed by millions of Likatonians.

MessageHmm, the AAS has provided a solid case for this bill, and as there are no proven side effects, we must think of the well being of the people, although we would like to see a chain of Deltarian restuarants opened up!!

MessageThe AAS also is fond of diverse cuisine... but the use of GM supplements our food source, it does not completely replace it.

Thus, there will always be Lodamese Takeaways in every town, and Deltarian restaurants serving their delicious (but, let's face it... cheap and basic) fare in most cities.

GM crops are unlikely to ever replace Deltarian "Black Bread and Beer".

MessageWhat about an improved crop getting loose into the ecosystem, and supplanting other species? For every bug that can't eat or digest these crops it is one more dent in the food chain, until it collapses.
Normally we would take to ecological questions with a chainsaw and woodchipper, however the consequenses of super plants damaging existing crops (not to mention the millions that will be paid to genetic engineering companies for producing patented plants - subsequently pushing up food prices for everyone) are far to serious for us to look the other way.
Many members of TOTAL have expressed feelings so strongly about these issue that if this proposal is passed we would not be suprised to see direct action being taken by our members to stifle propagation.

MessageOur nation is not getting hungry.

I'd like to say to the AAS Party as far as i know Likatonia was never a mere few thousand strong we for a long time were one of the largest nations in population size and have not had this problem of starvation.

Last time i checked adding pig cells to Tomatoes was not natural or normal.

MessageIn response to the RWLP: The AAS is not talking about recent history... we are talking about our pre-industrialised nation. It is only a few centuries ago, that our population actually managed a LONG-TERM break of populations above a million. Disease and poor hygeine kept our population much lower for much of our nation's 'Dark Ages'.

MessageRLP will support on the basis of scientific and economic freedom. People have the right to eat what they want, even if it is bright purple carrots. (And yes, we did see some last night. It was a goooood party)

Random fact: Parties have the ability to endorse another party's candidate for the Head of State election (if there is one). This adds a strategic element to the elections.
