Bill: Riksdag Seats Reform Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Socialdemokratiska Partiet (SDP)
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 3931
Description[?]:
179 is an illogical number, but 100 is too few, at one representative per 1000000 people. We propose a 500 seat legislature, with one representative for every 200000 people. |

Message | We will abstain for now, but we would prefer less politicians. |

Message | If it's an even number we risk a parliamentary stalemate. It shouldn't be able to be divided by 2. |

Message | It doesn't matter if it's even or not; you just need 251 seats in this case to form a majority. Most countries have an even number, and many have more than 500. The U.K. has 650. |

Message | Of course it matters. What happens if both sides get 250? We've had that problem before. |

Message | With 500 seats, you need at least 251 to have a majority, and with 501 you also need 251. With 179, the largest party or coalition could get 89 seats and everyone else less, and they wouldn't have a majority. It doesn't matter if it's an odd or even number, you just need a majority. The U.K. Parliament works with 650. The chances of two absolutely opposed coalitions each totalling 250 are tiny, and the situation would be the same as one party not gaining a majority, even with an odd number. In any case, in an absolute stalemate both sides could just agree to call an early election. |
