"In old time, the Khan was praised, Jelbanians recalled their Fathers' stories and so that the middle of their souls could be imbued with iron, stupid and weak people were not protected from failure. Jelbania, in state, race, work, school and this table [government] must return to old glories."

Official:

The State Religion specified is "Krtékdow [The Way of the Wolf]".

The Khan is revered as a living deity. Worship assumes rites and offerings toward natural entities, such as rivers, springs, trees and mountains, often in the name of the Khan. As Nature is unforgiving, the religion does not encourage pity upon the weak and unfortunate, although rites may pray for them to find inner strength.

The first Khan is considered a God of creation from hence all Jelbic tradition came ("Jezsuadmojad" -- The Great Founding). Patrilineal tradition is important as ancestor worship allows families to remember those closer to the time of the first Khan and therefore that of creation. Stories of fathers in the family are passed down -- usually embellished for good storytelling -- to allow great battles won defending the Khan's work to be celebrated, often with songs, large bonfires and indulgent feasting. Alcoholic beverages from the fermentation of brews from whatever can be grown using whatever yeast falls into it are often consumed.

Weak children and animals were originally used in fire sacrifices to return building materials to the Earth from whence the Jelbic people came. Such practices often picked on children that would -- to modern eyes -- be ill or have learning difficulties. They have long since ended, but the expression "[Heimojrzajatra] Jezfrjplz grzy suadmo" ([If you don't improve I will] set up the big fireplace [pyre]) is used to threaten or even softly encourage under-performing youngsters into redoubling their efforts; "Jezfriplz firja krmo" (to come from the big fireplace) also exists to express getting out of a difficult situation as children were sometimes known to escape the pyres. Unfortunately, although these children were viewed "reborn", it cemented the practice in the ancients and allowed it to continue.

The 13 full moons -- "Heijklune" (True Moon; corruption of "Heiji Klune") -- of the year are celebrated with meals with family and colleagues, usually the nearest Friday ends at 12pm with colleagues eating then drinking together before families eat together at dusk before enjoying each other's company further. The 7th of these is considered the birthday of the first Khan and thus creation -- "Jezklune" (Great Moon), resulting in a week-long public holiday and a feast. No traditional fare was fixed as food in nomadic times was whatever could be obtained; each Taghe has its own speciality and individual towns and cities have their own special dishes to add. Each "Heijklune" is associated with a specific Jelbanian geographical feature, the shrines of which have parades and celebrations on top of the usual "Heijklune" fare.

"Kyz Kumaijogad/Kumaijozuo" (Girl Chasing) is often played on "Heijklune". The Khan being a man, the religion is strange in that the creation of woman is noteworthily missing from oral tradition, then scripture. The first is mentioned appearing on a horse on a trek, which the Khan himself had to chase three times. Although patriarchal tradition is strong -- perhaps even outright sexist to modern tastes -- women are represented as strong-willed and independently minded (as would have been needed to survive austere winters) and have been since the outset.

Jezafrkmo'ko" (Inquisitors) have also been documented, especially in times of war or crisis when loyalty to the Khan needed to be assured. Persons believed disloyal by gangs of purple-tunicked horsemen-clerics (sometimes green vestments were used) were subjected to a "Jezfrjplz" after tortures, (often) false confessions and show trials. Their existence was owed to a passage in an old story of the 4th Khan, who spake thus:

"They will ride either with me or in my name. Those who leave my side will know truth when they find it, quash lies in fire and return as strengthened Wolves."

Despite this supposedly virtuous exhortation, "Jezafrkmo'ko" were more political, often bribed, relied on local hearsay/vendettas and even in cases fought rival bands. Modern far-right vigilantes have been known to use the name.

MessageOOC: I like this a lot, but it's a pretty significant departure from the very-basic work that Reddy/Kubrick/Polites have done (they worked on Tanhrism, an analogue [basically] of Tengrism as the religion of the Jelbics). I think it's worth involving them in the discussion. I'll link them here and we can get their thoughts.

MessageOOC: Ah, shit. Aside from adopting a Japan-style solution (Two national religions, one endogenous (Shinto), one regional (Buddhism)), I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm really short of time to read up on the culture and the ins and outs as I work and commute, so this limits the amount I can contribute without crossing what's gone before.

I have the legislature but I genuinely can't contribute to something I started due to not wanting to trample the past work of people who were in different nations or not even players of Jelbic cultures. God help the newbies.

Take what you want from this discussion for the archive, but I think I have to go.

MessageOOC: FTR, I'll stick on the forum to work on OHJ in an advisory role. However, otherwise, I feel there's nothing I can genuinely add now.
